What you'll need.

Parents please make sure to stay on top of all the cutting action. Use scissors that are appropriate for the age and skills of your little ones.

art-layers-4

After the fun cutting is finished, layer the paper scraps on top of a full size paper.

art-layers-5

Create the art cover. Simply cut out a shape from a regular piece of paper. Tip: we used black paper for the cover, because the high contrast makes the scraps pop.

Place the cover on top of your paper scrap layers. Feel free to move, change, shuffle, and reorder the layers until you say "WOW, this is it!" Trim the excess paper.

Keep cutting, layering, and creating awesome serendipitous art!

Art Layers

This activity was born out of the desire to show our kids that a little bit of chaos and randomness can produce beautiful things.

Lately our little ones have become concerned with doing everything the “right way”. We actually don’t mind that, but what we don’t like is the paralysis and worry that not knowing what is the “right way” of doing something produces on them.

This activity helps them embrace the fact that exploring, experimenting, cutting, and toying around with materials can produce amazing results at the end.
